Rio Conventions Pavilion at UNFCCC COP27

At COP 27, in Sharm el Sheikh, the Rio Conventions Pavilion programme of events is generously hosted at the GEF-GCF Pavilion.  Browse the entire programme of their events.

What is clear and unequivocal is the need for coordinated measures to meaningfully slow or reverse climate change, land degradation, and biodiversity loss to safeguard human health and livelihoods, ensure food and water security, and leave a sustainable legacy for future generations. Protecting and restoring nature can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon storage, providing more than one-third of the cost-effective climate mitigation needed between now and 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels.

The returns from a regenerative restoration economy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, and biodiversity loss are estimated to be worth USD 125-140 trillion annually – up to one and a half times global GDP in 2021. Many scientists and decisionmakers suggest that the numerous efficiency gains of joint land, climate, and biodiversity prioritization underscore the mutual benefits that arise from bridging the aims of the three Rio Conventions rather than pursuing their objectives in isolation.

The RCP events are as follows:

Land restoration: a nature-based solution for resilience in times of uncertainty

Land restoration is critical for responding to multiple global crises, including biodiversity loss and climate change. However, land restoration cannot be scaled up quickly enough to significantly reduce peak global temperatures and is ultimately limited by existing land uses. While restoring ecosystems is crucial for planetary health, it is no substitute for preventing emissions from fossil fuels. Cost-effective and flexible restoration pathways can be tailored to just about any context and scale if there is political will, inclusive governance, and sustained finance.

Africa’s NDC Implementation in global food and energy crises

The event will explore the energy and food transition in Africa including the barriers and opportunities for (Nationally Determined Contribution) NDC implementation. This will include a dialogue with an expert panel to discuss what opportunities, including the policy, regulatory and legislative changes that can facilitate accelerated implementation. The event will be followed by a drinks reception, with light snacks, providing you the opportunity to mingle with our speakers and other audience members on how to support nationally determined low carbon transitioning in these sectors in light of current global challenges.
